β€œHe would fade into something impalpable under her eyes and then in a moment he would be transfigured. Weakness and timidity and inexperience would fall from him in that magic moment.” - James Joyce in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

[Drawing of a white cat wearing a pink scarf and pink boots walking on a snow while more snow falls in a green sky. There’s a caption that says “I’m going to make it through December, through Winter, through the holidays, and through the year. I’m going to make it.”]

Pangalay

The Tausug people populate the Filipino province of Sulu, Mindanao, and Palawan. They do a traditional dance called the Pangalay, which is the “fingernail dance” and is performed usually during weddings, birthdays, and other festive events. It involves elaborate body postures and graceful gestures and poses. The dances also have eloquent hand movements that are enhanced with the Janggay, which are ornamented metal nails.

Yakan Bride

I usually incorporate tattoos from the Kalinga tribe in my drawings, but I  I’ve been exploring more about (pre-colonial) Filipino culture, and recently discovered the Yakan Tribe. They are known for their beautiful, colorful, and detailed weaving textiles. They have a face painting custom called the “Tanyak Tanyak” that is only worn during wedding ceremonies.

I can’t wait to create more work highlighting the beauty that the different cultures represent in the Philippines.
